Variations on a Theme

Variations on a Theme is a term borrowed from the musical vocabulary. It describes the way new melodies can be created with the same notes depending on the ways their combination into a sequence, their intensity, rhythm or key is altered. A similar process happens when different eyes look at a picture: its elements are identified, combined and read by the viewer according to their own subjectivity. The same image will then tell a different story, will play a different song for each pair of eyes and ears it reaches..
Here you will have the opportunity to see with your own eyes, but also through someone else's eyes.
In the next page you will find a gallery of self-portraits that supposedly reveal something about me. I invite you to look at them, to look behind them. As you engage with an image you will do so through the lens of your subjectivity; the same image supposed to say something about me will then say something about you, becoming a collective self-portrait.
In the following section you will have a chance to compare your reading of some selected pictures to those of other viewers.
